Dance

The essential problem in depicting the dance is the understanding that dance is something that exists only in the moment – it flows through a passage of time. Visual artists – painters and sculptors are essentially freezing a moment in time – the very opposite of dance as an art form.

My response to this problem is to emphasise the importance of composition (the relationship between a figure and the space it occupies). The drawings look simple and straightforward, but every work is carefully planned to suggest a sense of movement and rhythm, leading the eye in the direction I wish it to go. With the use of simple, uncomplicated lighting and stripping away any distracting elements, I have hopefully created a series of often dramatic images that hold the viewers’ attention.
